Restoring roads and footways after utility works

We are SWQR (Street Works Qualifications Register) approved for utility trench reinstatement, restoring roads and footways to the required standard after utility works.

Utility works can leave a narrow excavation running through an otherwise serviceable road or footway. Reinstatement restores the excavated area so it meets the surrounding surface and the requirements of the job. The visible finish is only part of the work: the condition of the trench, the layers below and the surrounding edges also matter.

H. Evans Road Contractors Ltd is SWQR (Street Works Qualifications Register) approved for utility trench reinstatement to roads and footways. We assess the area left by the utility works and discuss the proposed reinstatement before quoting. Tell us whether the excavation is on a road, footway or private site, and provide any requirements or information supplied by the utility contractor.

Suitable for

  • Roads
  • Footways

What needs to be considered

  • The trench and surrounding surface

The length, width and depth of the excavation help establish the scope, but its condition and the existing road or footway are important too. Clear photos and any available excavation details help prepare for the site visit.

  • Layers and compaction

Reinstatement needs to take account of the construction below the finished surface, not simply cover an opening. The required preparation, materials and layers are determined by the site and the applicable requirements for the work.

  • The finished surface and joins

The reinstated area must be considered alongside the existing surface, including its edges, levels and nearby covers. If the utility works have affected road lines or other markings, flag this when discussing the full scope.

Agreeing responsibilities before work starts

Tell us who is responsible for the utility works and whether there are specifications, permits or access arrangements already in place. Public roads and footways can have requirements that differ from private premises. These need to be identified before work is agreed, including who is arranging any necessary permissions and traffic or pedestrian management.

Risk Assessments and Method Statements supplied before work starts.
